Home Networking

Wireless Networking -vs - Hardwired Networks

Should I go Wireless or Hardwire? This is the question asked by many home users looking to add a second or third computer to their home. Here are some things to consider before making the final decision.

1. How far away are the computers from each other.

2. Is my home capable of being hard wired (ie can a technician even get wire down the walls) On many two story homes that are already built running wire down the walls is not possible, so you must go wireless.

3. What is my budget?

4. Are any of the computers Laptops or Notebooks?

If you are building a new house, always get it prewired for a local in-home network, run cables from a central office area to each bedroom and any other places you may want a computer. Even if you never use the network, it will add resale value to your home, since the next buyer would not have the chance to run cables in the framing state. If you have laptops as the extra computers then I would always suggest going wireless, it makes owning a notebook or laptop computer worthwhile, move around while maintaining your web connection, even go outside if its nice! If you have Desktops to be networked and can have cable run, always go hardwired, this system in the long run is more reliable and you are wasting money buying the more expensive wireless equipment, and again this network will add resale value to your home. If your house is very large and you want to use wireless equipment, you may need to use extra antenna or repeaters to get better signal gain to each computer.

Anyway you go, you will enjoy having your high speed connection in multiple locations on multiple computers, while still paying the same one price for the internet access. This makes high speed seem more affordable in the long run.
